Cockroach Exterminator for Central NJ Kitchens, Baths, and Apartments

Central Jersey Pest Control works as a cockroach exterminator for homes, apartments, and condos throughout Central New Jersey. Roach control goes far better when it starts with the right species and an honest map of where they live, so our technician identifies what you have before a single bait placement goes down.

German or American roach? Why the species decides the plan

Most indoor roach problems in New Jersey homes involve one of two insects, and they behave so differently that the same approach will not work for both.

German cockroach: the one that lives with you

Rutgers Cooperative Extension describes the adult German cockroach as 1/2 to 5/8 inch long, golden brown to dark brown, with two dark parallel stripes on the shield behind the head. Adults have wings but cannot fly. The female carries an egg case holding about 40 eggs until just before they hatch, and Rutgers puts a female's life span at 140 to 280 days. That combination is why a few roaches turn into many over a single season.

This is the species that breeds indoors. In a Rutgers survey of roughly 1,500 low-income apartments in four New Jersey cities in 2018 and 2019, 36% had cockroaches, and German cockroaches made up 97.8% of what was found.

American cockroach: the visitor from the pipes

American cockroaches tend to show up one at a time near a floor drain, a basement, or a laundry room. Rutgers notes that their source is often far from where you see them, such as city sewer lines or damaged or abandoned plumbing. Control here leans on finding the route in and closing it, with bait or spray used only if needed.

Hot spots: stoves, refrigerators, sinks, and tubs

German roaches are mostly active at night and prefer cracks and crevices that rarely get disturbed. Rutgers reports that in kitchens the biggest numbers usually sit around the stove and refrigerator, and in bathrooms around the sink, toilet, and tub or shower. Food and water are close, and the warm motor housings and wall gaps give them cover.

Seeing roaches out in daylight is a meaningful sign. Rutgers points out that daytime activity usually signals a severe infestation, because the hiding spots are already crowded.

  • Hinges and inner corners of cabinets near the sink
  • The gap between the stove and the counter, and the stove drawer
  • Behind and under the refrigerator, especially near the compressor
  • Dishwasher edges, microwave vents, and coffee makers
  • Bathroom vanity backs and the pipe openings beneath them

What our cockroach exterminator visit includes

We work in a set order so each visit builds on the last one. Here is what you can expect from the first appointment onward.

Inspection with sticky monitors

Our technician checks each hot spot with a flashlight and sets sticky monitors inside cabinets, beside the stove, and under sinks. Rutgers calls sticky traps very useful for measuring whether control is working, and we read them at every visit to see which rooms are improving and which are not.

Gel bait placed where they actually hide

Rutgers reports that gel bait is usually more effective than bait stations because it can be placed closer to where roaches shelter. We apply small placements into cracks, hinges, and voids following the product label, kept out of reach of children and pets. Bait stations still have a role in spots where gel does not fit.

Sealing gaps and plumbing openings

Gaps around pipes, loose escutcheon plates, and cracks along walls and floors give roaches cover and, for American roaches, a way in from below. We point these out and seal the ones within reach, and we tell you which ones need a plumber.

Why roach bombs and store sprays fall short

Grabbing a can when roaches appear is the usual first move, but Rutgers states that most over-the-counter sprays and aerosols are not effective against German cockroaches, and it advises against total-release foggers (bug bombs). A fogger mostly coats open surfaces, while the roaches sit deep in cracks and appliance voids.

If you have already sprayed or fogged, tell us which products you used and where. Our technician plans bait placements around those areas and may hold off in spots that were just treated with something else.

Roaches in apartments, condos, and townhomes

Shared walls change the job. Rutgers explains that apartment buildings see more infestations because roaches spread between units through common utilities, shared walls, and hallways. Treating one unit while the neighbors are untreated tends to produce short-lived results.

In older multifamily buildings in Edison, Woodbridge, or Sayreville, we suggest the landlord or association inspect the units that share plumbing walls with yours. When we treat more than one unit at the same time, progress usually holds up better between visits.

Your part between roach control visits

Bait works best when it is the most attractive food in the room. Rutgers recommends keeping the kitchen and bathroom clean, cutting off food and water, clearing clutter, and taking trash out daily. In practice that means:

  • Wipe crumbs and grease from counters and the stovetop each night
  • Store dry goods and pet food in sealed containers
  • Fix dripping faucets and wipe the sink dry before bed
  • Thin out cardboard and paper bags under the sink and in pantries
  • Leave our bait placements and monitors where they are

FAQ

Questions about cockroach control

Are cockroaches a health concern?

Rutgers notes that German cockroach droppings, shed skins, and dead bodies contain allergens that can trigger asthma. Reducing the population and cleaning up residue both matter for that reason.

How many visits does roach control take?

It depends on how heavy the activity is and whether neighboring units are involved. We schedule follow-ups and use the sticky monitors to decide when visits can be spaced out.

I saw one big roach in the basement. Is that an infestation?

A single roach near a basement drain is often an American cockroach that came in from plumbing or outdoors. It is worth an inspection, but the plan usually focuses on entry points rather than baiting the whole house.

Why do roaches keep showing up even though the kitchen is clean?

Cleaning helps, but it cannot reach the egg cases. Rutgers notes that a German cockroach female carries an egg case of about 40 eggs until just before hatching, so new nymphs keep appearing from hidden spots. Bait placed in those spots, plus follow-up visits, is what wears the population down.

Do you handle roaches in restaurants and other businesses?

Yes. Food service and other commercial sites follow a different schedule and reporting routine, which we cover on our commercial pest control page.

Do I need to leave the house during treatment?

Your technician will explain any steps to take before and after the visit, following the product label, including anything about reentering treated rooms.
