Pest Control in Piscataway, NJ: For Renters, Landlords and Homeowners
Large parts of Piscataway make up the Livingston and Busch campuses of Rutgers University, and Central Jersey Pest Control knows that a township shared by students, landlords and long-time homeowners needs more than one kind of pest plan. Bed bugs and German cockroaches in shared housing, mice in family homes and ticks in leafy yards all start the same way with us: a free inspection and a written quote.

A township of campuses, rentals and long-settled neighborhoods
Piscataway counted 60,804 residents at the 2020 census across 18.96 square miles. It is one of the oldest places in the state, formed on December 17, 1666, and incorporated as a township on February 21, 1798. Its localities include Arbor, Bound Brook Heights, Fieldville, Lake Nelson, New Market, North Stelton, Possumtown and Riverview Manor, and SHI Stadium sits within its borders.
That mix means two very different sets of calls. Near the campuses, the questions often come from tenants and property owners dealing with pests that travel with people and their belongings. In the residential sections, they look like any suburban household: ants in spring, ticks in summer, mice in fall. We handle both, and we adjust the plan to the building and the people living in it.
Bed bugs in Piscataway shared housing
Bed bugs do not care about grades or leases. Rutgers Cooperative Extension says they spread over long distances by travel and by moving infested furniture, and that they move between rooms and adjoining apartments through hallways and shared walls. Around a college campus, where leases turn over and used couches change hands, those are exactly the conditions that let a few bugs become a building-wide issue.
Signs to look for, according to Rutgers: small black or brown spots (fecal stains) on sheets and mattresses, and the bugs themselves hiding in mattress and box spring seams, bed frame joints, behind baseboards, inside outlets and in clutter near the bed or couch. Adults are mahogany red and about a quarter inch long. Rutgers also notes that bed bugs do not transmit diseases, though most people get itchy welts.
Before you bring furniture home
Rutgers recommends inspecting used furniture and clothing thoroughly before bringing it inside and skipping anything that shows signs unless every bug has been killed. After staying in a room you suspect, wash your clothes and run them in a hot dryer for at least 30 minutes.
Why an empty room over break does not starve them out
It is tempting to think a few weeks away will solve the problem. Rutgers says bed bugs can survive a few months without feeding and sometimes longer than a year. Development from egg to adult takes as little as one month and up to four, and a female can lay up to 500 eggs over her life. That is why a room left empty over winter break can still have bugs waiting in the mattress seams in January. Interceptor cups under bed legs, checked every 7 to 10 days until a full month passes with no catches, are one way Rutgers suggests confirming that control has held.
Why one apartment is rarely enough
In multi-unit buildings, Rutgers advises that all apartments and common areas be inspected and treated as needed to get control. Elimination usually takes weeks to months, and no single method works every time. Our bed bug treatment plans start with a careful room-by-room inspection, then combine methods and follow-up visits. For landlords, we can inspect adjacent units in the same trip.
German cockroaches in student kitchens and apartments
Rutgers fact sheet FS1322 describes the German cockroach as an apartment pest that spreads between units through common utilities, shared walls and hallways. It hides in cracks and voids away from light, mostly in kitchens and bathrooms, with the heaviest numbers around the stove and refrigerator, under the sink, in cabinet corners and hinges, and in drawers. Its droppings, shed skins and dead bodies carry allergens that can trigger asthma.
The same fact sheet explains why store-bought sprays often disappoint: resistance and repellency make liquid sprays less effective than bait, and pyrethroid sprays can push roaches into the unit next door. Total release foggers are called ineffective and can be a fire hazard near gas appliances if overused. Our cockroach control service relies on gel bait placed in small dots at hiding spots, sticky monitors to track numbers, and follow-ups every few weeks until the monitors stay clean. Rutgers uses four weeks with no roaches seen as the mark of elimination, and so do we.
- Take trash out daily and keep food in sealed containers.
- Wipe crumbs and grease from around the stove and under the toaster.
- Fix dripping faucets and wet cabinet bases.
- Tell your landlord early, since neighbors' units are part of the picture.
Who calls the exterminator in a Piscataway rental?
In a rental, tenants and owners both have a stake, and it helps to sort that out before the visit. We take requests from either side. If you are a tenant, mention who owns or manages the property so we can coordinate access and the quote. If you are an owner, tell us how many units are in the building and whether any tenants have reported the same pest. That shapes how many rooms and units we need to see.
Single-family Piscataway: mice, ants and summer ticks
Away from the campuses, a lot of Piscataway is single-family neighborhoods where the pest calendar follows the seasons. Some of that history is military: Camp Kilmer was built starting in 1941 on 1,500 acres of Piscataway and Edison. Whatever the age of your house, older ones tend to have more gaps at the foundation and sill plate, and newer ones still have utility and vent openings.
For mice, the CDC notes an opening about a quarter inch wide is enough. We look at the gap between foundation and soil, attic and crawl space vents, utility holes, and doors without weather stripping, then trap inside and seal outside. Small holes get steel wool and caulk or foam; bigger ones get hardware cloth or metal. Our mouse control page explains the full process.
For ticks, parkland such as Johnson Park, home to the reconstructed 18th and 19th century buildings of East Jersey Old Town Village, is a reminder that Piscataway has wooded and grassy edges. The CDC lists leaf litter removal, cutting back brush, frequent mowing and a three-foot strip of wood chips or gravel at the wood line as yard steps. Our yard tick treatment focuses on those borders.
Our Piscataway inspection, step by step
Send the request form with your ZIP, the pest you suspect and whether you rent or own. We call or email to set up the free inspection. Our technician looks at the rooms and areas where you have seen activity, checks likely hiding spots and entry points, and explains what the evidence shows. You receive a written quote before any treatment.
If you approve the work, your technician will explain the prep and follow-up steps the product label requires. For bed bugs, that includes preparing laundry and clearing clutter around beds. For cockroaches, it may mean emptying a few cabinets before the visit.
Highland Park and Somerset, right next door
Piscataway borders Highland Park, the small borough just over the township line, which has its own town page with us. On another side lies Franklin Township, which most people know as Somerset, where farm fields and canal parkland make ticks and mosquitoes the bigger concern.
FAQ
Piscataway pest control questions
I am a Rutgers student renting in Piscataway. Can I request an inspection myself?
Yes. Fill out the form and tell us who manages the property. We will coordinate with you, and with the owner if they are paying for the work.
Do bed bugs spread disease?
Rutgers Cooperative Extension notes that bed bugs do not transmit diseases. Their bites usually cause itchy welts, and the stress and lost sleep are real reasons to deal with them promptly.
Can you treat a whole apartment building for cockroaches?
Yes. Because German cockroaches move between units through shared walls and utilities, we prefer to inspect neighboring units too. The quote will reflect how many units are involved.
Should I set off a bug bomb before you arrive?
Please do not. Rutgers notes that total release foggers do not eliminate cockroach infestations and can be a fire hazard near gas appliances.
